Course content
The problem of continuity and discontinuity in the history of Russian literature. Russian romanticism. Russian realism. Russian modernism as a revolt against mimetic art: impressionism, symbolism, art nouveau. Russian avant-garde. Artistic production by the emigrants. Art in the hands of ideology and the efforts of its liberation.

Learning outcomes
Following the courses dedicated to the history of Russia and its literature, this course is dedicated to the most prominent streams in Russian culture of the 19th and 20th centuries in a more complex way, which means that we shall focus on analysing the streams as manifested in visual art, music and architecture and thus create a wider context in which the acquired knowledge of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th century can be incorporated. Special attention is paid to the period to the end of the 19th century till the 1930?s (modernism, avant-garde) and also to the discussions of this issue among the scholars.
Students will acquire a deeper insight into the main features of the dynamic varried Russian art of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Prerequisites
This course requires a profound knowledge of the history of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th century, a good knowledge of history of Russia and an insight into the development of modern European culture.

Written exam

Active participation in seminars (discussion, presentation, reading the recommended texts), max. 2 absences Passing the written test (max. three attempts)
