Learning outcomes
The course will introduce students to the main trends, movements, personalities, and concepts in the development of Russian architecture, sculpture, fine art, and music. The lectures will take into account the diachronic plan, i.e. they will be structured within a historical sequence of individual phenomena. At the same time, the individual art forms, i.e. architecture, fine art, and music, are examined in independent modules. This course is closely related to the subjects of the history of Russia and Russian literature. It focuses on the most important movements and styles in Russian culture from the Middle Ages to the 20th century in a complex approach. In particular, the emphasis is put on the search for manifestations of the same artistic trends in visual arts, music, architecture, etc. The students can apply their knowledge of the development of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries in order to integrate it into a broad framework of art history as a whole. The main focus is on the period of the late 19th and the first third of the 20th century (modernism, avant-garde), including discussions on this issue among scholars. The course is structured as a lecture course, but students will have the opportunity to study each module independently, to prepare for classes, and to study the additional materials for each module. The dialogue aspect of the lecture will also be taken into account, students will be given open-ended questions for discussion.
Students will acquire a deeper insight into the main features in the dynamics and variety of Russian art from the Middle Ages to the late 20th century. Students will be able to apply their knowledge both in other subjects, including Russian literature or history, and in their future professional practice. The course provides a necessary foundation of knowledge about Russian culture for future teachers and translators.
