Analysis of selected texts by Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Goncharov, Tolstoy and Chekhov.

|
We shall deal with different possibilities of interpretation of a fiction text, how the interpretation changed throughout the 19th century and soviet simplistic interpretation given in textbooks till the non-canonical tendencies later on. We shall also discuss ecranisaion and dramatization of some texts. The course should present the students with a deeper insight into the specific features of Russian literature of the 19th century. We are searching for the reasons why was the Russian literature of that time already perceived as prominent European literature and why it influenced the world literature of the 20th century.
Students will get a detailed insight into the main features of the dynamic and varied Russian art of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Prerequisites
|
This course requires a deep knowledge of history of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, a good knowledge of historical development of Russia and modern European culture.

|
Written exam
Active participation (discussion, presentation, reading the assigned texts), max. 2 absences passing the credit test
