Learning outcomes
|
This course focuses on the Russian fiction writers and poets and on perception of their work in Czech culture. The seminars are dedicated to analysis Russian great novels from 19th and 20th centuries, as listed below. We shall deal with works by Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gorky, Babel, Bunin, Zamyatin. We shall also discuss the ?silver age? in Russian poetry, especially the modernist poets: A. Blok. A. Bely: A. Akhmatova, M. Tsvetaeva, O. Mandelstam, B. Pasternak, S. Yesenin, V. Mayakovski. In the last part of the seminar we shall talk about the development of Russian prose in the 20th century: Nabokov, Pasternak, Bulgakov, Grossman, Sholokhov, Solzhenicyn and Shalamov.
Students will understand the development of Russian literature in the 20th century and the method of literary analysis.

Prerequisites
|
A practical knowledge of Russian, at least B1 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages. Knowledge of the basic terminology of literary theory from the course Introduction to Literary Theory and the knowledge of theoretical basis as presented at the course Russian Literature of the 19th Century 1 and 2 and Russian literature of the 20th century 1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam, Written exam, Student performance
Reading and understanding the assigned texts. An ability for giving an aesthetical interpretation of literary work in the philosophical, psychological and socio-historical context. Knowledge of genres and topics of the literature of the 20th century, knowledge of terminology, understanding the essence of literary streams. Learning the necessary theoretical base about the literature of the 20th century.
