Course content
1. Lexicology as a linguistic discipline and its relation to other linguistic disciplines. Basic units and terminology. 2. The meaning of a word. 3. Polysemy, metonymy, metaphor. 4. Homonymy, paronymy. 5. Synonymy. 6. Antonymy. 7. Motivation and its types. 8. Phraseology and the basic features of phrasemes. Classification of phrasemes 9. Classification of lexicon from different points (of view of its origins, core and periphery, passive and active vocabulary, stylistic differentiation,...) 10. Word formation. Vocabulary development. 11. Substandard lexical units. 12. New tendencies in present day Russian lexicon. 13. Lexicography, types of dictionaries. 14. Basic principles of orthography (with application to Russian and Czech).

Learning outcomes
This course is dedicated to the key questions of modern lexicology and lexicography, including phraseology. The following topics are discussed: complex description of word as the basic unit of lexical level of language, the essence of lexical meaning, differentiation of lexicon, the base of word-formation, phraseology and lexicography, basic Russian dictionaries, polysemy, metaphor, metonymy, homonymy, synonymy, antonymy, semantic field, lexical meaning, new phenonema in Russian lexicon. We shall also discuss the semasiological characteristics of current Russian phraseological system, the phraseological units (phrasemes), the meaning of a phraseme as compared to lexeme, the borders of phraseology and its relation to lexicology, terminology and peremiology. Diachronic and synchronic approaches in phraseology, original and borrowed phrasemes.
Understanding the basic concepts of lexicology and basic insight into the lexical system of Russian both in synchronic and diachronic aspects, basis of phraseology.
Prerequisites
A practical knowledge of Russian, at least A2 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.
