Course content
1. A.S. Pushkin: Romanticism. The Gypsies,The Prisoner of the Caucasus, The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin as a parody. 2. A.S. Pushkin: The development of Russian novel. Eugene Onegin. 3. A.S. Pushkin: The Bronze Horseman, The Queen of Spades, The Little Tragedies. 4. M.J. Lermontov: The Novice, Demon, The Masquerade. 5. M.J. Lermontov: The Hero of Our Time. 6. N.V. Gogol: Drama, Dead Souls 7. N.V. Gogol: Tales from Petersburg, Ukrainian cycles. 8. I.A. Goncharov: Oblomov. 9. I.S. Turgenev: Development of Russian novel. 10. F.M. Learning outcomes
In the first part of this course the students will get familiar with the development of Russian drama, novel and prose of the first half of the 19th century, after which the attention is focused on the key figures of Russian poetry of that period. We shall focus on the changes of poetics occurring since the beginning of 19th century till the domain of realism as the prevalent stream in Russian literature. In the second part the course we shall discuss selected writers and movements in Russian literature of the second half of the 19th century, the development of short story, novel, poetry, drama and aesthetics of that period and the conflict between the concept of art for art and the concept of functional essence of art. We shall also focus on the reception of Russian critical realism abroad and the history of Russian and Czech literary relations, including the present day reception of 19th century Russian literature in Czech culture. The analysis of literary work should take into consideration the existing scholarly approaches to a given literary work.
Students will get an insight into the Russian drama, poetry and prose of the 2nd half of the 19th century and will acquire basic methodology of literary analysis.
Prerequisites
A practical knowledge of Russian, at least A2 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages. Knowledge of the basic terminology of literary theory from the course Introduction to Literary Theory and the knowledge of theoretical basis as presented at the course Russian Literature of the 19th Century 1.
