Course content
Philosophical aspect of realism. Realistic fiction as a sign. Russian, French, English, Spanish, German, Polish and Czech realism. Features of the world realism. The changes of realism in visual art.

Learning outcomes
This course is focused primarily on realism in Russia and its parallels in Polish, French, English, Spanish, German and Czech realism as well as in the world novel. We shall discuss the relation between the reality of the text and outside the text and the problem of realistic fiction as a sign, as well as the realistic view of the world in philosophy. The lectures are held by invited specialists for the specific fields (literature, history, visual art, music.)
The insight into the literary, philosophical and historical context of realism and its specific features in different countries. Understanding the approach and methods of realism in the 20th century.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of literary theory, ability to read literary texts, knowledge of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries.
