Course content
|
The course introduces students to the basic types of audiovisual translation, especially subtitling, dubbing, and voice-over. Attention is paid to their functions, differences, advantages, and limitations, as well as to the specific features of translating spoken language, dialogue, cultural references, and humour in audiovisual works. The main part of the course focuses on subtitle creation. Students will become familiar with the basic principles of subtitling, including subtitle length, the number of characters per line, reading speed, timing, text segmentation, visual layout, and the relationship between subtitles, image, and sound. The course also covers the technical aspects of subtitling: an overview of available software and online tools, work with subtitle files, and basic procedures for creating and editing subtitles. In the practical part of the course, students independently create subtitles for selected audiovisual material, such as a film excerpt, a short video, or a video from online platforms. The resulting subtitles are analysed and assessed in terms of linguistic accuracy, readability, technical quality, and suitability for the target audience.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic forms of audiovisual translation and their specific features. Students will gain an overview of the main types of audiovisual translation, particularly subtitling, dubbing, and voice-over, and will acquire the basic theoretical, linguistic, and technical principles of subtitle creation. Emphasis is placed on practical mastery of the subtitling process, work with selected subtitling tools, and the ability to adapt translation to the technical, temporal, and audience-related requirements of audiovisual media. Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with the basic types of audiovisual translation, understand the main principles of subtitle creation, be able to work with subtitling software, and independently create subtitles for selected audiovisual material.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to distinguish between the basic types of audiovisual translation and describe their specific features, advantages, and limitations. They will be familiar with the basic principles of subtitle creation, including timing, subtitle length, the number of characters per line, reading speed, text segmentation, and visual layout. Students will be able to work with selected subtitling tools, create subtitles for audiovisual material, and assess their linguistic, technical, and functional quality. They will be able to adapt the translation to the needs of the target audience, the nature of the audiovisual work, and the technical requirements of the chosen medium.

Prerequisites
|
A good command of the Russian language and Czech, basic translation skills, and computer literacy are expected. Basic familiarity with multimedia files is an advantage; however, previous experience with subtitling or professional subtitling software is not required.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance, Final project
Active participation in seminars with maximum two absences and continuous completion of practical assignments. Students will work with selected audiovisual materials and subtitling tools, analyse different types of audiovisual translation, and independently create subtitles according to specified technical and linguistic parameters. The requirements include the completion of a practical project, i.e. the creation of subtitles for selected audiovisual material and their presentation or reflection. The course is completed by obtaining a course-unit credit awarded on the basis of active participation, completion of continuous assignments, and submission of the final practical output.
