Course content
|
1. Summary of the topics of last semester (levelling of knowledge with students of other colleges) 2. History of translation from Russian into Czech. The most significant personalities in the field. 3. Chapters from the history of translation theory. Czech, Russian and Slovak theoreticians of translation, schools of translation theory; basic literature in the field of translation studies. 4. Selected issues in fiction translation I (translation of phraseological units, proper names, titles of literary works, dialects, Common Czech etc.) 5. Selected issues in fiction translation II (interferences in translation, intertexuality, untranslatable phenomena etc.) 6. Translation criticism, translation and the issue of becoming outdated. 7. Equivalence and adequacy in translation. 8. Pragmatics in translation.

Learning outcomes
|
This is a follow up course to Theory and Methodology of Translation. It aims to provide students with a complete survey of the findings of modern translation theory, its history and the most significant representatives. Students get acquainted with the theory of fiction translation, the elementary principles of translation criticism, the issues related to equivalence and adequacy in translation etc. They are led to be able to use their theoretical knowledge in the process of their own translation.
Students will gain a complete survey of the basic findings of modern theory of translation, with a focus on fiction translation.

Prerequisites
|
The course is intended especially for Mgr. students of Russian philology. Having previously taken the course Theory and Methodology of Translation is an advantage.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Written exam
Giving a report on a set topic from the field of translation studies in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, Passing the final test and the oral colloquy.
