Course content
|
Theoretical introduction. Comparative Linguistics, its development and present day status. The aims, methods and objects of comparative linguistics. The structure of comparing particular phenomena (phases, approaches to comparison, tertium comparationis.) Language universals and language unique phenomena. Typology and contrastology. Analysis and presentation of methods and principles of comparing the phonetic, derivational, morphological, syntactic and lexico-phraseological phenomena in languages, contrastive analysis of texts.

Learning outcomes
|
This course is both theoretical and practical and is dedicated to the basic problematic of comparative linguistics, the development of the Slavonic and world comparative linguistics, the subject of the discipline, basic principles of comparing language phenomena, methodology, principles and current technologies of comparative studies of typologically related or unrelated languages. In particular we shall talk about methods, principles and approaches to comparing the phonetic and phonological phenomena, word-formation, morphological phenomena, syntax as well as text. The students shall also get familiar with the basis of comparative lexicology and phraseology from the semasiologic and onomasiologic view-point and also the basis of comparative communicative linguistics. Special attention is paid to the phenomena universal in all languages vs. the unique phenomena. We shall define the typological, genetic, territorial, national and cultural elements in selected languages.
Students will understand the methods and approaches used in comparative linguistics and are able to carry on their own scientific research with application of the comparative methods.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of Russian language (at least B1 level), knowledge of the basis of Russian morphology and syntax.

Preparing notes about articles from scientific journals to be analyzed in each lesson; Working with dictionaries, collecting material for individual scientific research; An essay on a selected topic (scientific research in comparative linguistics) Regular attendance (max. 2 absences)
