Course content
2. About the language of Polish folklore, folklore genres and methods of their study 3. The regional linguistic and cultural heritage as a testimony of identity 4. Folklore between archive and stage - about collecting, processing and providing access to materials concerning language and folk culture 5. Linguistic and cultural image of the Polish harvest festival in folk songs and harvest chants 6. Folk carols as a source of knowledge about Polish customs 7. The image of the world and man in Polish folk ballads 8. Why is it worthwhile to study the regional linguistic and cultural heritage? 9. Polish musical folklore and its transformations 10. Polish folk customs and rituals The activities within the project will be carried out by research and teaching experts who have scientific achievements and appropriate teaching experience in this subject.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is: - to introduce students to the methodology of the study of Polish folk language in a broad cultural context. The course will show how language functions in folk culture (especially in folklore texts, rituals and traditional music) and how folk culture can be studied (reconstructed) through the study of the language of folklore, - to improve the knowledge of the Polish language in its regional varieties and to discover how language functions in rituals and musical folklore - in the past and in the present. For this purpose the students will be introduced to archival recordings from field research conducted since the 1960s at the Institute of Polish Philology of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University and collected at the Ethnolinguistic Laboratory, as well as contemporary 'live' interpretations of songs performed by The Saint Nicholas Orchestra, which has been successfully performing on the Polish folklore scene for many years, - to get to know cultural heritage related to Polish language, - to master the ability of working with different sources, understanding, analyzing, drawing conclusions, - to shape student's intercultural sensitivity.
The participants of the seminar will improve their linguistic, communicative and cultural competencies.
Prerequisites
The course is designed for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. The course is taught in Polish.

Student performance

Regular active participation in seminars 80%, i.e. 2 absences per semester, self-study of the literature on the subject.
