Course content
1. Management (definition of management, types and levels of management, cycles of management, basic definition of organization). 2. Overview of development of management as a scientific discipline (distinguishing approaches and directions, meaning for present practice). 3. Mechanist approach (classical theories of management, common features and differences). 4. Organist approach (human relations school and behavioural approaches). 5. System approach (organization as an open system, system and contingency approaches, postmodern approaches). 6. Function and role of managers (function of management, levels of management, personality and role of managers, competencies of managers and critical/key factors of success). 7. Planning (characteristics and importance of planning, types of plans and planning procedure, target management and working activities management). 8. Organizing (process and principles of organizing, types of organization structures, changes in organization and their consequences). 9. Motivating (general terminology, motivation theories centred on causes, motivation theories centred on process of motivating, activity motivation). 10. Leading people (management and leadership, definitions of leadership and stales of leadership, factors of effective leadership). 11. Controlling (process of control and its phases, principles of effective controlling). 12. Manager´s decisions (importance of decisions in management practice, process and types of decisions).

Learning outcomes
The goal of the course is the introduction of the theory of management and its practical applications. Part of the course is the introduction to the history of management, primarily in its social context, and the presentation of essential managerial activities.
Student defines the basic terminology from the management theory and knows the relationships between them. Student knows the development of approaches and the present concept of management. Student is able to explain the essence of management functions and their interrelationships. Student knows the basic techniques used in the practice of management. Student diagnoses the situation context in organization practice. Student reacts adequately in model situations. Student can use basic documents of organization to assess the efficiency of its management. Student uses appropriately management techniques. Student is able to use gained knowledge and skills and work out the set tasks centred on using selected management techniques in a real organization practice.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark

To gain the credit it is necessary to be active during tutorials, fulfil and present tasks (oral presentation at a tutorial, work out and hand in a tasks´ portfolio). In case of absence - see correspondence tasks. The exam is oral and a discussion on the correspondence tasks is one of its parts.
