Course content
|
1. Social solidarity in modern age. Durkheim - organic and mechanic solidarity, Simmel - solidarity in the city money based society. 2. Socialization and social construction of reality. Social construction of the individual´s reality. Socialization theory of G. H. Mead. Socialization as a mean of inclusion or exclusion. 3. Nationalism. Political and biological model of a nation. 4. Total collectivist ideologies. Holocaust and categorical murders. Danger of an over-bureaucratic society. 5. Racism and science. The issue of the tyranny of the majority. Ethnocentrism and assimilationist approach vs. cultural relativism. 6. Problems of social coexistence in Bohemia. Historical position of the Roma in Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia by the year 1992. 7. Situations of the Roma in the Czech society I. Problems of social exclusion of the Roma - ghettoization, culture of poverty. 8. Inclusion through the weak and strong social bonds. Granovetter: "The strength of the weak bonds". Inclusion and exclusion through school education: Bernestein - limited and unfinished communication codes. 9. Children and social coexistence. Children´s homes, the issue of bullying at schools. Bullying endangers democracy. 10. Migration and the models of coexistence. Assimilation and discrimination models. Cultural pluralism. Integration models. Illegal and exploitative work. 11. Other minorities. People with body or mind disorders, the homeless. 12. Gender minorities. The issue of private and public space. The position of women in the public sphere. Men and fatherhood and social conflicts in the context of divorces.

Learning outcomes
|
The course introduces sociological concepts of minority-majority groups coexistence. It analyzes the problems of social exclusion. It explains sociological concepts of migration and illegal employment. It conceptualizes other minorities like gender ones, handicapped people and position of children in society.
Student knows basic theoretical approaches to the issue of minorities and the problems of social coexistence. Student: - can identify a minor and socially excluded group, - has learnt about the culture of poverty, - is able to discuss about the issues of different cultures coexistence, - is able to suggest possible ways to include groups of the handicapped, - is aware of the complexity of the issue. Student can see the reasons of social exclusion (not only ethical, but also cultural or based on health conditions and handicaps) and the social conflict situations coming out of this and use this knowledge in a real company environment and a collective of professionals.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
The discipline terminates with a colloquium. Student answers one question in a form of reflection. Student chooses the question form previously prepared list. Then there is a discussion on the student´s text.
