Course content
Academic study of religions as a scientific discipline. Academic study of religions and Theology; religion and philosophy of religion. Subject of Religious Studies research. Academic terminology. Basic concepts of academic study of religions. Understanding versus explanation. The main methods of Religious Studies research. The various sub-disciplines of the academic study of religions. The institutionalization of the discipline. Important figures of the discipline. Contemporary issues.

Learning outcomes
The course introduces the fundamentals of the academic study of religions as a discipline, its nature and objectives. It outlines the history of the discipline, its subject of study, religious studies sub-disciplines, the main theoretical concepts and methods, important figures and institutions, past and present issues discussed.
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to name basic theories within religious studies research; demonstrate knowledge of the key theoretical approaches and their representatives within the discipline; define the basic principles of religious studies as a social science disciplines; assess the importance of religious phenomena in archaic and modern societies; discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the main theoretical approaches of the academic study of religions.

The student studies the following study material: 1) T. Bubík; S. Kotherová: Religionistika v kognitivní, antropologické a sociologické perspektivě. 2) T. Bubík: České bádání o náboženství ve 20. století 3) the content of lectures 4) a description of religious monuments (churches and other religious buildings, cemeteries, statues, devotionals, etc.) in their place of residence, including (their own) visual documentation and bibliography, up to a maximum of 10 standard pages. The text itself must be at least 7 standard pages (1 standard page/1800 characters per page). References used in the literature related to the local topic, if any, must also be included. The deadline for submission of the paper is 20 January. 5) After this date, the oral examination will take place.
