Course content
Reading and discussion of the following topics: Introduction to the course and its content and requirements 1. Searching for the origins of religious studies 2. Outsider and insider in religious studies 3. Religious studies as a cultural science 4. Evolutionary development of rituals 5. Brain, body and culture. Biocultural theories of religion 6. Superstition in the cognitive model 7. Ritual behaviour and anxiety reduction 8. Religious priming 9. The limits of religious trust 10. Morality and religious behaviour 11. The influence of religiosity on attitudes towards other ethnic groups 12. Ethical and methodological problems of religious scholars in the context of work in public administration For each issue, students will be given scholarly texts as required reading.

Learning outcomes
The course will present and discuss the main theoretical and methodological problems of contemporary religious studies, such as cognitive shift, criticism of the concept of religion, the application of new theories, issues of religion and gender, corporeality, sacrality, insider / outsider, reductionism or current ethical problems in religious research. Students will gain critical insight into the nature of religious research and the ability to discuss the nature of the field. The course will take the form of presentations, reading and discussion of selected texts.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student will read the text on the subject for each hour. At the same time he / she will prepare a 10-page seminar paper on a selected theoretical problem of religious studies, which he / she submits a week before the exam. The exam will focus on the knowledge of the seminar paper topic viewed in wider RS context. The deadline for submission is 20 January.
