Course content
1. Human relationship as a part of the profession of a social worker - specific features of the people professions, person in a need and his/her expectations vs. the expectations of the helper. Specific features of the relationship of a person in need and a professional helper. Social communication as basis of therapeutic relationship. Focusing. Social work ethics (repetition). Problematic client in social work - definition of the term, typology. "Instructions"? 2. Silent client - what can be the reason for the client´s silence? Watzlawick´s definition of communication, behaviour and "non-behaviour", communication and non-communication, silence as a way of communication. How to deal and work with a silent client. A client who keeps complaining and refuses help typical scheme of the behaviour and its causes. Symptoms of such behaviour. Confusing scheme of the reaction to help. "Yes, but ?" in transaction analysis of Eric Berne. Working with a client who keeps complaining but refuses the offered help. 3. Involuntary client - distinguishing from a client in resistance, two basic types of involuntary clients. Ethical question of work with involuntary clients. Ways of work with involuntary clients, legislation in the hands of a social worker, role of counselling. Resistant client - resistance as a protective mechanism. Ways of work with resistant clients, role of thrust, save environment, fully informed client. 4. Depressive client - definition of the term depression. Ways of work with depressive clients. Depression and suicidal tendencies. Suicidal client - definition of the terms. Crisis intervention in social work. Reorientation of a client. How to work with a client who is endangered with a suicide, specific demands for communication. Social worker and working with own self in crisis intervention. Abreaction in crisis intervention. 5. Manipulating client - definition of the term manipulation, goals of manipulation, manipulative behaviour. How to work with a manipulative client. Consistency and formulation of firm barriers and structure, client fully informed about social worker´s competencies. Working with the "healthier" part of the client´s personality. Aggressive client - definition of the basic terminology - power and its kinds, aggression, power gap. Aggression as a reaction to something dangerous, safety and working with the feeling safety in social work. Aversive stimulus. How to work with an aggressive client. Personal protection of a social worker. 6. Clients with health disorders in social work. The issue of people with seeing difficulties in social work. The issue of people with hearing difficulties in social work. 7. Clients with health disorders in social work II. Clients with learning difficulties in social work 8. Elderly clients of social work. Validation therapy as a specific form of communication with the "confused" elderly 9. Probation and mediation in social work in the criminal justice Mediation in social work besides criminal justice. 10.Social work with criminal victims 11. Domestic violence 12. Social work with groups in institutions

Learning outcomes
The course deals with the issues of relationship in social work, the process of social work and some specific types of clients of social work. Further social work in various institutions is introduced, e.g. probation and mediation service, institutions etc. The course is designed on the basis of problems; the goal is not to provide definite instruction. The students' own experiences are widely used.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam, Written exam, Seminar Work

This discipline is attested by a credit and an exam. To gain the credit it is necessary to fulfil all the correspondence tasks written in the study material, see above. Gaining the credit is a necessary condition to be allowed to take the exam. The exam has a written test form followed by an oral test.
