This course will be a graduate-level introduction to the dominant theoretical perspectives in cultural and social anthropology. The material is ordered more or less chronologically and has been broken down into eleven lecture-and-discussion topics. The class will spend approximately one period on each. Before the class begins discussion of any topic, students should have read the required materials and be prepared to talk about them in class. At the beginning of the semester, you will receive a set of questions that should help guide your reading and prepare for class. Recommended readings will not figure into course grades but are suggested for students wishing to achieve a more thorough understanding of the salient topics.
