Learning outcomes
The course puts a question to what extent the concept of social deviance is a concept of social power formed through hegemonic ideologies. In this context, it introduces students to the sociological theories of social deviance from Marx, Durkheim and Merton to interactionism (labeling theory) and constructivism (Foucault, Berger and Luckmann). The course deals with application of these theories and is concerned with the construction of deviance through ethnicity, poverty, mental illness, gender and sexuality.
To be able to describe and analyse basic theories of social deviance. To apply these theories (above all social constructivism and labeling theory) on social reality. To deconstruct stereotypes concerning deviance of ethnicity, disability, and mental illness.
