Course content
|
1. Introduction into the topic of social work with the elderly, basic terminology (old age, aging, quality of life in old age). 2. Critical points of the life spin in old age, the need of social intervention. 3. Special features of the elderly as service users - cognitive disorders, poly-morbidity, the needs of old people, addictions etc. 4. Counselling for the elderly. 5. Education for the elderly, functions, basic types of institutions, memory training. 6. Social services for the elderly - ambulant. 7. Social services for the elderly - terrain. 8. Social services for the elderly - residential. 9. Special situations in care of the elderly - LGBT + old people, sexuality and intimacy, syndrome EAN, prevention, solution and multidisciplinary cooperation. 10. Activation of the elderly (not only) in residential care. 11. Respite care for the elderly, care of the care-givers. 12. Hospice care. Social work in health care institutions. Counselling for the survivors.

Learning outcomes
|
In this discipline we reflect special features of old people in social work, possible ways of (and limits) of influencing and enriching of the life of the elderly. Students gain basic information about aging and old age, demographic development of the population, which can create new forms of social work with the elderly. Students should be able to get oriented in critical points of life spin of the old people and in social work interventions used with this age category; students think of various ways, strategies of intervention in terms of education, counselling and care of the elderly in regard of the needs of this age category. In the course students can use the aids simulating various types of pathological phenomenon for example tremors or hearing and visual difficulties and "Age Simulation Suit Gert".
Students know and are able to define basic terminology - senior, aging, old age, changes in old age, needs of the elderly. Students know critical points of the life spin in old age and are able to offer solutions in form of appropriate social intervention. Students know various social services for the elderly and tools of their influence. Students know special aspects of old age in the context of social services. Students know the tools of education and activation for the elderly. Students know how to react effectively to special situations in the care of the elderly. Students know how to design effective tools of social services, respite and hospice care of the elderly.
