Learning outcomes
|
The course provides an overview of the basic problems of sociological exploration of religion. It shows a change in the importance of exploring religion during the development of sociological thinking. It acquaints the students with some approaches in the definition of religion, informs about outstanding authors and works and the methodology of sociological research of religion. It deals with issues of religious experience and its expression, religious behavior, functions of religion and social conflicts that are connected with religious life. It informs about the types of religious groups and about the processes that take place in contemporary society and which involve changes in religious life.
Students will be able to: name the basic theories within the sociology of religion; demonstrate knowledge of key theoretical approaches and their representatives in sociology religion; define the basic principles of sociology of religion as a social science discipline; to evaluate the importance of religious phenomena in modern societies; discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the main theoretical approaches.
