Learning outcomes
|
The course is based primarily on reading, commenting and discussing the classic sociological publication Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann "Social Construction of Reality". During the course, the book is read in the auditorium, where these passages are interpreted and put into a broader context. The course is focused not only on verifying the reading comprehension, but also on the ability to put the reading text (theory and concept) into a broader sociological context. The texts illustrating the use of social constructivism in selected areas of sociology (sociology of gender, sociology of ethnicity and nationalism, sociology of memory and sociology of religion) are read and discussed, as well. The social constructivism is critically discussed, including the efforts to overcome the deficiencies of social constructivism and to seek a synthesis of nominalism and realism, respectively. interpretativism and positivism.
At the end of the course students should be able to apply the basic principles and ideas of social constructivism.
