Course content
|
1. Supportive disciplines of social work with a family. Demographic, sociological and psychological data as a source of knowledge for social work with a family and its methods and techniques. Law disciplines and present legislation connecting to social work with a family. 2. Comprehensive view of a family, and actual trends. 3. Family and its functions in the present society. Traditional functions of a family and their changes until now. Characteristics of the main function that families offer to their members and functions towards the family system and the social functions maintaining. Family perspective and its function in the future. 4. Family in a crisis and alternatives to families. Definition of the family crisis in a non-evaluative and general sense and in relation to the changing functions. Family crisis aspects and individual points of view to them. Possible ways how to solve the crisis and stabilize the family as the basic unit of a society. 5. Alternative ways of human coexistence which take over some of the family functions. 6. Divorces and divorce rate. Divorces and divorce rate in the present legislation, demographic data and social trends. Social and psychological aspects of a divorce, consequences for the family system and its elements. 7. Series monogamy and remarriages, composite families. 8. Endangered children care in the Czech Republic. Present legislation and institutional basis of the endangered children care, basic ethical questions of such care. Perspectives of endangered children care, cooperating institutions and organizations, interdisciplinary cooperation. 9. Elderly person in a family. The senior´s needs in the family system. Grandparent´s role. Elder abused and neglect (EAN). Forms and symptoms of EAN, possible interventions. 10. Specific methods and techniques of social work in a family. Actual trends in the social work with a family. Using individual methods and techniques of social work in the milieu of a family as a social group. Systemic approaches and solution focused brief therapy. Narrative therapy and miracle question. 11. Effective communication in the social work with a family. Social worker´s communication with individual members of a family, social worker´s communication with the whole family. Communication barriers and overcoming them. Effective communication. 12. Remediation of a family. The meaning and importance of the family remediation, principles of the family remediation. Legislation and institution basis of the socially activating service for the families with children. Limits of remediation.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of this discipline is to help students understand the main principles, rules and strategies of social work with families as a social work method. Students encounter the source disciplines of the social work with families, mainly their data. Students are thought how to use e.g. sociological, psychological and demographical data, which has a lot of pieces of information for the social work with families. Students adopt the principles of the methods and techniques of social work applied within families as a small social group, a system and an institution.
Student names the main actual problems of a family as an institution and as a system. Student has learnt the actual trends of methods and techniques of the social work with a family. Student can explain the issues of the family remediation in a broad context. Student can interpret the demographic and sociological data connected to the family issues. Student can explain the issue of present family crisis and its alternatives in an expert way. Student can choose effectively among the scale of methods and techniques of social work in a family. Student can assess appropriateness of individual approaches towards social work with a family. Student can delegate the family in a problematic situation to other forms of help. Student can suggest an effective procedure of work with a problematic family system. Student can use the system of supportive services for families Student can discuss the limits of social work with a family.

For the successful colloquium it is necessary to actively participate in the tutorials and to work out the set correspondence task.
