Course content
1. Disability studies, types of disability, social context 2. Historical and social context of disability 3. Political and cultural context of disability 4. Visual impairment 5. Hearing impairment 6. Mental illness, mental impairment 7. Mental retardation, intellectual impairment 8. Motor skills impairment 9. Speech disabilities 10. The network of social assistance for people with disabilities in the Czech Republic 11. Comprehensive rehabilitation 12. People with disabilities as an objects and as a subjects of the social research.

Lecture, Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming), Demonstration, Activating (Simulations, Games, Dramatization), Group work
Learning outcomes
The seminar introduces to students people with disabilities who have specific needs, individual and social. It explains the basic characteristics of each basic categories of disabilities, their limitations and potentials. Disability, however, makes an impact on social groups, which disabled are the members. In the seminar students will train the communication with people with disabilities, especially sensory disabilities. In the course students can use the aids simulating various types of pathological phenomenon for example tremors or hearing and visual difficulties.
Students are able to characterize disabilities, have knowledge of their risks. Students are able to describe basic disabilities and their impact on the social research. Students understand available literature on the topic which will help them in furthering their education.
Prerequisites
Basic orientation in the process and rules of sociological research.

Assessment methods and criteria
Systematic Observation of Student, Seminar Work

Compulsory attendance at 75% of the classes, active participation in the class. Completion of a correspondence assignment between seminars. Completion of a written paper - sociological research project - 5 standard pages in length, please refer directly to the assignment for more precise instructions in Moodle. Students with prior excused absences of no more than 50% of the class will complete and submit the 5 correspondence assignments (Moodle).
