|
1. Introduction - what is sociological research? The relationship between sociological research and social work theory and practice, role of research, specific features of applied research, normative principle in scientific knowledge of social world. Social reality/realities and ethnocentrism. Research language. Role of a researcher and a social worker. 2. Formulation of a research target and a problem. Formulation of a research target. Formulation of a research problem. Systematic process in research activities. Choosing adequate topic, dangerous themes. 3. General frame of a research - research design. Overview of the state of the research. Theoretical concepts in social work - importance of the theory. Meaning of the research project. Working out a complex research project - from intention to realization, research report and its presentation. 4. Basic methodological approaches to social reality. Basic methodological approaches - quantitative and qualitative. Methodological differences. 5. Quantitative research. Research design of quantitative research. Research hypothesis - sources, types. Operationalization, indicators, variables. Selective techniques. 6. Research techniques - questionnaire. Types of questions. Creation of a questionnaire, dramaturgy, formulation and sequence of questions. Advantages and disadvantages of questionnaire when compared with interview. 7. Proceeding and interpreting quantitative data. Proceeding quantitative data, statistic procedures and interpretation. 8. Qualitative research. Research design of qualitative research. Basic types of research. Selective techniques. 9. Research techniques - interview. Types of questions. Preparation and realization of an interview. Asking questions. Level of structuring of an interview, types of an interview, individual and group interview. Recording an interview, rewriting data. 10. Other research methods and techniques. Selected quantitative and qualitative research methods and techniques (of ethnographic research, narrative research, phenomenological research, biographical research). Basic overview - ethnographic observation, qualified estimations, case studies, mental mapping, secondary data and document analysis, visual data and social icon-sphere analysis, analysis of needs, focus groups). 11. Proceeding and interpreting qualitative data, assessing and distinguishing the quality of a research. Proceeding qualitative data, data analysis and interpretation. Research quality and the ways to check it and find it out, validity and reliability. Information reduction. 12. Ethics in the social research, research report. Ethical principles. Informed agreement. Making data anonymous and handling personal data. Protection of all included agents. Structure and final nature of a research report, presentation of outcomes.

Learning outcomes
|
This course introduces basic methods and techniques of sociological research useful in the theory and practice of social work. Its aim is to gain orientation in the basic methodological approaches to the social realities, procedures, methods and techniques of research, know their limits and know how to present and use the lessons learned. Describe qualitative and quantitative research strategies and research techniques in relation to the applied level and competence of social worker. Emphasizes the role of research objectives (research problem) for the choice of the research strategy. Students are introduced to the fundamental rules of sociological research design, analysis problems and interpretation of data. .
Student: knows the basis of sociological research and its relationship with social work theory and practice; knows the general frame of a research, basic methodological approaches to reality; knows basic methods and techniques of sociological research; distinguishes qualitative and quantitative research; knows other research methods and techniques, basic ways of proceeding and interpreting qualitative data; knows how to control the quality of researches and ethical principles of sociological research. Student: can formulate research target and problem and choose adequate quantitative or qualitative methodology for the survey; can suggest research design of quantitative or qualitative research and in the qualitative design can define and formulate hypothesis; can prepare a questionnaire and an interview as basic research techniques, distinguishes quality of a survey and follows ethical principles and rules when realizing a research. Student: is able to prepare a qualitative and quantitative research project as a form of applied research in social work and realize on one´s own elementary qualitative and quantitative research; is able to reflect critically and use the outcomes of research surveys in social worker´s profession.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam
To get the colloquium it is necessary to work out both correspondence tasks from the study material. Colloquium has a form of a group discussion over the texts of correspondence tasks.
