Course content
1. Central Asia and Caucasus ? geographical, linguistic and ethnic, context, survey of main ethnologic works from this area. 2. Forms of nomadism in Central Asia, interaction between pastoralists and sedentary people earlier and today (Khazanov) 3. Textile production (carpets and their origins and symbols, syrmaks and suzani , silk production); (Kybalová, Jungr, Ford) 4. Causasus (Russian Caucasus: Adyghe, Ingush, Dagestan, Kabardian, Osetia, Chechna) ethnics, religion and cultures. 5. Caucasus ? Georgia (Khevsureti, Tusheti, Svaneti), Azerbaijan, (Tata, Talysh) 6. Caucasus ? Armenia and Nagorno - Karabakh 7. Post-soviet Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan) 8. Post-soviet Central Asia (Tadjikistan, Kyrgizstan) 9. Post-soviet Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Karakalpakstan) 10. Mongolia

Learning outcomes
The course presents the great mosaic of cultures in Central Asia and Caucasus. The mixture of different influences and traditions typical for this area creates a unique ethnic, religious and economic collage. The content of the course will be focused on history of particular areas and regions, on social, ecological and political issues of 21. century.
Students will gain a basic overview in geographic and cultural issues of discussed regions, will be able to explain the historical roots of present-day situation. They learn about the main cultural regions and their character identify main problematic areas in studied regions.
