Course content
1. Culture, etymology of the concept, changes of the concept. 2. Cultural sociology as a research program: post-positivism, meaning and causality. 3. Cultural turnover: from the theory of cultural analysis to methods of cultural analysis. 4. Sociology of culture. Cultural production. 5. Class, power and culture. Ideology and modern culture. Ideology in the culture of mass media. 6. Sociology of beauty. Beauty and ugliness as a social construct. 7. Sociology of taste and style. 8. Sociology of advertising. Consumption as a cultural interpretation.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to know the basic topics and theories of sociology of culture, including their interconnection with the problems of sociology of art, cultural anthropology, sociology of mass media and popular culture. The students develop the skills of critical analysis, reflection, interpretation and comparison applied to the field of cultural reality.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Written exam

Active participation in seminars, -critical reading and analysis of compulsory literature discussed at seminars and lectures, -written and oral presentation of a text based on the application of appropriate theory to the analysis of one of the partial problems discussed in the course, -passing of a written test. Knowledge and skills are verified in colloquium and by continuous assessment and feedback.
