Course content
|
1. Disability studies, disability, types, social context. 2. Historical, social, political and cultural contexts of disability. 3. Visual impairment, communication with people with visual impairment. 4. Hearing impairment, communication with persons with hearing impairment. 5. Mental disability, communication with persons with mental disabilities. 6. Intellectual disability and dementia, communication with persons with intellectual disability or dementia. 7. Motor disabilities, communication with persons with motor disabilities. 8. Speech impairment, communication with persons with speech impairment. 9. Severe and infaustive illnesses, communication with persons with life-threatening illnesses. 10. Social assistance network for persons with disabilities in the Czech Republic, compensatory rehabilitation. 11. Persons with disabilities as objects and subjects of helping professions. 12. Summary of the course, application of knowledge to the practice of helping professions, discussion.

Learning outcomes
|
In the discipline, students will be introduced to people with disabilities who have specific individual and social needs. The basic characteristics of each of the main groups of disabilities, their limitations, as well as the potentials they bring to their bearers will be explained. The seminar component of the discipline will be devoted to training in communication with persons with disabilities. Students can use these skills when meeting or working with persons with disabilities in various helping professions. The discipline focuses on the application of knowledge and skills in the school setting.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance, Seminar Work
Compulsory attendance at 75% of classes, active participation in class. Completion of a correspondence assignment in between seminars. Preparation of a written work - a project of application of the acquired knowledge to the practice of a school facility, taking into account the specifics of communication and the limits of the selected target group - the scope of 5 standard pages. The student can focus on one selected disability. The purpose of the text is a proposal to improve the conditions for education of people with disabilities. The sources used must be properly referenced. The assignment will be subject to antiplagiarism check. Students with previously excused absences of maximum 50% of the class will prepare and submit 3 out of 5 correspondence assignments in Moodle - of their choice - within the given deadlines.
