Course content
COURSE CONTENT: 1. General introduction Africa - chronology, languages, ethnicity, sources of learning about Africa's past. 2. Ethnogenesis of the African continent 3. Changes of European conceptualization of Africa from the 18th to the 20th century 4. Pre-colonial history 5. The beginnings of European expansion, the slave trade 6. African regions in the 19th century 7. Struggle for Africa - division of Africa, principle of direct and indirect colonial administration 8. Period of peak colonialism 9. Struggle for independence, decolonization 10. Development of African states from 60 to 70 years 11. Development of African states from the 1980s to the present 12. Outbreaks of ethnic conflicts in contemporary Africa

Learning outcomes
The course provides an overview of the history of Sub-Saharan Africa. In the lectures, students will learn about historical milestones such as paleoanthropological findings, Bantu expansion, the emergence of large pre-colonial civilizations, the consequences of the clash of Europe and Africa, the transatlantic slave trade, Christianization, colonialism, the struggle for independence and decolonization. The last three lectures are devoted to the post-colonial period focusing on the current hotspots of ethnic and religious conflicts, causes and consequences of the economic and political crisis of contemporary African states.
