Course content
. Gender - the rise of the term. Sex and gender to be natural and socially constructed. 2. Criticism of the sex/gender opposites. Present gender theories - Butler, West - Zimmerman, Young. Criticism of the statist character of the original theories - gender as a variable and a socially constructed characteristic. 3. Gender socialization. Primary and secondary socialization. Different socialization of boys and girls. Gender as the forming part of individual identity. 4. Deviations from the gender norms - the issue of gender rights I. Social invisibility of the gender norms deviation. Homosexuality and bisexuality in the public space. 5. Deviations from the gender norms - the issue of gender rights II. Social invisibility of the gender norms deviation. Transsexuality and intersexuality in the public space. 6. Gender and the public space I. Gender in the labour market. Gender and social stratification. Glass phenomena - glass ceiling and glass elevator. 7. Gender and the public space II. Gender mainstreaming and gender budgeting - gender equality in the process of political decision and in the budget policy. 8. Gender and the private space I. Gender division of labour in families. Maternity privilege. 9. Gender and the private space II. Child care and the relationships after divorce. 10. Gender and criminality I. Gender and prison. Gender determinants of criminality. 11. Gender and criminality II. The issue of domestic violence. 12. Medial picture of gender. Gender in advertisement. Gender in the life-style magazines.

Learning outcomes
The course introduces students with main authors and concepts of gender studies, explains historical reasons of formation of the term "gender" and contemporary criticism of the historical concepts. The course is concerned with gender and sexual normativity (regarding job market), gender division of labour, distribution of gender roles in public and private spheres and issues of gender and criminality.
- Student knows the basic theoretical approaches towards gender issue, knows about the problems of gender minorities, of the position of men and women in the public and private spheres of (the Czech) society, - Student is aware of the basic gender stereotypes. - Student is able to name the basic gender problems, can distinguish between cultural and natural in the essence of men and women, can realize and analyse basic barriers for women in the public sphere and for men in the private sphere, is able to identify basic prejudices, which work against the gender minorities not only in the labour market. - Student can analyse basic gender stereotypes. - In the frame of the personal manager profession and similar, student is able to identify basic barriers which make it impossible for women and gender minorities to succeed in an individual company and is also able to identify the reasons why milieu like that makes it more difficult for men to succeed in private sphere. - Student can suggest solution to help solve all problems mentioned above.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

The subject is concluded by colloquium. Student answers one question in a form of reasoning. The question is chosen from the prepared list. Finally there will be a discussion over the student´s text.
