Course content
A brief introduction to the geography of religion ? The ontological concept of culture and the category of deity ? Babylonian captivity and the emergence of the Jewish diaspora ? Hellenism in the ancient Mediterranean and the assimilation of Near Asian and Egyptian cults ? The beginnings of Christianity and the Roman Empire ? Mongol and Chinese empires ? The Spanish Reconquista and the demise of the European caliphate ? The conquest of the New World and Catholic syncretism in Mesoamerican religions ? Reformation and re-catholization ? Hinduism and the unification of India

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the geographical issues of religious-conquest wars, the methods of colonization (assimilation, persecution, elimination), and the effects on the participating religions (accommodation, syncretism, eclecticism). The content of the course is historical-religious processes from the perspective of the dynamics of religious-geographical territories, into which a partial religious system penetrated for a short period or planted cultural roots for a long time. The course aims to describe the geographical expansion, retreat, or assimilation of a sub-category of deity and cult and its associated political system.
