Course content
1. Philosophy as the basic way of asking the fundamental questions of human life and praxis, its nature, classification; care for the whole, possible approaches to philosophical and ethical studies in social work. 2. Ethics as practical philosophical discipline, options and limits of the coherence in the fundamental ethics, horizontal and vertical axis, basic classification and categorization of ethics, ethical theories as argumentation position of a social worker. 3. Ethics in social work and its importance (Vetlesen and Henriksen), options and limits, classification of ethics in social work (Frederic Reamer). 4. Values in social work (Shardlow), value as valere (etymology), ethical vs. other values, absolute vs. relative values, possible ways to articulate values, autonomous vs. heteronomous approach. 5. Values - plurality of approaches - Chris Clark, Felix Biestek, Sarah Banks, National association of social workers (NASW), etc. 6. Norms and professional standards; ethical codes, ethical code of social workers in the CR, compliances and differences between ethical codes (possible ways of comparing), discussion on possible positive and negative features of precisely formulated norms in ethical codes. 7. National and international organizations of social workers which support to the standards´ formulation (International federation of social workers - IFSW, National association of social workers - NASW, in the CR The society of social workers and Professional chamber of social workers). 8. Ethical problems and dilemmas, moral vs. ethical problem (Vetlesen and Henriksen), problematic situations, and their possible typology, process of solving ethical dilemmas, plurality of approaches when solving ethical dilemmas - Alan Gewirth, Loewenberg, Dolgoff a Pine, Ann Conrad and Frederick Reamer. 9. Discussing ethical dilemmas in social work (using the gained knowledge and possible usage of students experience so far). 10. Learning outcomes
The course offers the basic entry into the issues of philosophy and ethics of social work. As such it is divided into the three logic areas. The first area goal is to introduce philosophy and ethics as a way of questioning the fundamental human matters. The second area consists of the ethics - applied into the social work field; explanation of the crucial importance of it for social work practice, structure of social work ethics (Frederick Reamer: values, ethical codes, dilemmas and their solution strategies in social work). The third area goal is in supporting of inquiring attitude of students by offering the space for discussions on ethical dilemmas in social work - using both, previously taught knowledge and their personal and professional experience.
Student: - has learnt in the basic terminology of philosophy and fundamental ethics, - can determine and interpret the meaning of fundamental approach for its application to the sphere of social work, - can structure social work ethics as theoretical discipline and applied practice subject, - can identify basic values, norms and dilemmas of social work and knows the difference between them, - knows the selected sets of values and norms in social work, has learnt specially in the ethic codes problems, - can express the nature of ethical dilemmas and discuss them. Student: - can on one´s own or in small groups create materials for a discussion on ethical dilemmas and discuss them, - can use the rules of ethical code o practical situations, - can use at least one of the ways of solving ethical dilemmas in practice. Student: - can distinguish the difference between situations which touch the ethical problems and other situations, - distinguishes between ethical dilemmas and ethical problems and can evaluate following procedures, - is eligible to solve ethical dilemmas and choose from the possible solutions (values, ethic codes, ways of solving dilemmatic situations, supervision, etc.).

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Colloquium which has a form of an oral examination in small groups of students. The condition to attend the colloquium is a preparation of discussion on ethical dilemmas on one´s own (see the correspondence task) and active attendance during these discussions in the final tutorial.
