Course content
|
Course Topics 1. Contemporary Migration Trends and Challenges in the European Union Major migration flows, their causes, and their impacts on EU Member States. 2. EU Migration Policy and Migration Governance The institutional framework, key actors, and policy instruments shaping migration governance at the EU level. 3. Migrant Integration and Integration Policies Approaches to migrant integration, integration measures, and their implementation across different EU Member States. 4. Asylum, Forced Migration, and Refugee Protection The Common European Asylum System, international protection, and current challenges related to forced migration. 5. Case Studies and Institutional Practice in the Field of Migration Analysis of selected cases, engagement with academic literature, and examination of the work of institutions and organisations involved in migration at the EU level.

Learning outcomes
|
The course explores contemporary challenges related to migration, integration, and migration and integration policies within the European Union. It examines current developments through selected case studies and critical engagement with relevant academic literature. Particular attention is given to the institutional and policy-making dimensions of migration governance at the EU level. The course combines academic discussion with visits to institutions and organisations involved in migration policy and practice.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will acquire the following competences: The ability to critically analyse contemporary migration and integration processes within the European Union. The ability to understand the key principles, actors, and instruments of EU migration and integration policies. The ability to engage critically with academic literature and assess scholarly arguments and empirical findings. The ability to apply theoretical concepts to specific case studies in the field of migration and integration. The ability to navigate the EU institutional landscape and understand the roles of institutions and organisations involved in migration governance.

Prerequisites

Ability to read and understand academic texts in English

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
Course requirements: A minimum of 75% attendance, active participation in class activities, regular reading of assigned academic literature, and participation in scheduled visits to institutions and organisations working in the field of migration.
