|
The course is devoted to the history of religion as a field and provides a critical historical perspective of its development. It focuses on the initial birth and subsequent development of religious studies as an independent scientific discipline, developmental variants of religious studies, the most important methodological discussions and concepts. At the same time it gives an overview of the key personalities and their contribution to the field, presents historically important research institutes, informs about important congresses and conferences, magazines and publishing houses. It also deals with the organizational structure of world religion. Last but not least, it will focus on contemporary discussions in religion studies, including Czech and Central European study of religions.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student completes the course on the basis of an exam, knowledge of the lectures and field literature. The student will write a seminar paper of 10 standard pages (without bibliography), comparing works on history of the study of religion by Frank Whaling, Michael Stausberg, Gregory Alles and Tomáš Bubík.
