The aim of the course is to discuss Islam in an anthropological context and contemporary research. The course acquaints with the basics of Islam, especially orthopraxis, Sunnah, creating of Islamic tradition (Qur'an, Sunnah), social organization and the concept of authority. In particular it describes the current forms of Islam, perspectives of the current grasp of the topic and the results of anthropological research within Europe and the USA. It deals with Islam in public space and other topics (social integration), also with regard to the situation in the Czech Republic.
At the end of the course student should be able to describe basic concepts and conceptualization in the background of discussions about anthropological possibilities of perspectives of Islam study, globalization of Islam and ongoing processes (de-culturalization, de-ethnization etc.). Particular attention will be paid to the emic perspective and the worlds of Muslims.
