Course content
|
The objective of this course is to make the student familiar with basic tendencies in Spanish theatre development and to situate the theatre within a broader literary-social context. The theoretical part will focus on main tendencies, authors and dramatic texts. The course is divided into several blocks: 1. Medieval theatre: Auto de los Reyes Magos. 2. Transition to modern era: The deep grounds of La Celestina. 3. Renaissance: Juan del Encina, the father of Spanish theatre. Hernando de Ribera, Gil Vicente and Agustín de Rojas. Garcilaso's eclogues represented at the end of "First Renaissance". 4. Golden Age (El Siglo de Oro): commercial theatre. Spanish stages in the 17th century. Courts of comedy. Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca. 5. Leandro Fernández de Moratín and the "new comedy". El sí de las ninas. 6. Romanticism. Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino. 7. Theory of esperpento. Valle Inclán. Luces de bohemia. 8. Women in the theatre of García Lorca. Mariana Pineda, Yerma, Bodas de sangre and La casa de Bernarda Alba. 9. Alfonso Sastre. Antonio Buero Vallejo. El tragaluz. 10. The new approaches on the Spanish scene. Objectives of the practical part of the course: 1. Learn the language and the techniques of theatre. 2. Stimulate the development of creativity. 3. Enrich the student's vocabulary. 4. Acquire fluency, both in speaking and writing. 5. Develop sensibility to diverse problems. 6. Support expression and formulation of ideas. 7. Develop competence to analyse, to judge critically and self-critically. 8. Encourage participation and responsible division of functions.
