Course content
|
1. Spanish on four continents and the development of the concept of a pluricentric norm. Spanish in Spain, the Americas, the Philippines and Equatorial Guinea - main commonalities and differences. 2. Main sources of American Spanish and developmental theories about its origin. The phenomenon of language contact. The concept of Americanism, development and definition possibilities. 3. Language atlases and other Spanish language research projects on the American continent. 4. Dialectal zones: past and present views on their delimitation. Main features of American Spanish. 5. Mexican Spanish. Main features, internal differences. 6. Caribbean Spanish. The concept of Atlantic Spanish and commonalities with Canarian Spanish. Main commonalities and differences of Cuban, Puerto Rican and Dominican Spanish. 7. Central American Spanish. Main commonalities and differences of Spanish in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 8. Spanish in Venezuela and Colombia. 9. Andean Spanish. Main commonalities and differences of Ecuadorian, Peruvian and Bolivian Spanish. 10. Laplata Spanish. Main commonalities and differences of Argentine, Uruguayan and Paraguayan Spanish. 11. Chilean Spanish. 12. Spanish in the USA and the Spanglish phenomenon.

Learning outcomes
|
The course is focused on the phonetic, morphological, syntactic and lexical characteristics of the varieties of Spanish on the American continent and on the current linguistic situation of individual Latin American countries.
