Course content
|
The course deals with the following areas of morphology applied to the Spanish language: 1. Morphology: subject of study. Derivative, compositional, and inflectional morphology. 2. Morpheme and morphological classification of morphemes, semantic and structural criteria. Lexeme/root, affixes, endings. Bound and free morphemes. Allomorphs. 3. Morphological analysis. Types of words. 4. Word formation. Types of derivation. Derivative vs. flexion. 5. Prefixation. Types of prefixes. 6. Suffixing. Types of suffixes. 7. Parasynthesis. 8. Interfixation and infixation. 9. Composition. 10. Abbreviations, acronyms, acronyms. In addition, the course deals with the parts of speech in Spanish (nouns, adjectives, pronouns, numerals, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections) with an emphasis on the specifics of their grammatical categories and usage in Spanish. The most difficult grammatical phenomena are practiced in the seminars: the formation of feminine and plural forms for less common or formally unusual words; use of the definite article; forming deverbal adjectives and less common superlatives with adjectives and adverbs; combining verb forms with unstressed pronouns; creation of ordinal numbers; forms of irregular verbs; forming participles; meaning and use of verbal periphrasis; meaning and use of conjunctions and interjections.

Learning outcomes
|
The teaching is aimed at clarifying basic morphological concepts and at obtaining basic knowledge in the field of both morphological analysis and morphological processes (especially inflection, derivation, and composition), as well as individual parts of speech with an emphasis on the specifics of their grammatical categories in Spanish. The seminars are focused on the practical application of theoretical knowledge and the most difficult grammatical phenomena will be practiced in them.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam
Written exam, practical exercises, reading about 200 pages of linguistic texts in Spanish, participation in classes.
