Course content

1. Native American languages and their current status. Native American language research and its place in linguistics and Hispanic studies. Possibilities for the classification of Native American languages. 2. The effects of Native American languages on Spanish in general and on variants of Spanish in Hispano-American countries at the phonetic, grammatical and lexical level. 3. Current language situation in LA countries. 4. Legislation relating to Native American languages in LA lands. 5. Bilingual intercultural education in LA countries and the issue of creating literary standards in Indian languages. 6. The most important language families and languages on the LA continent. 7. Mesoamerican language families and the most important languages. Native American languages in present-day Mexico. 8. Nahuatl. The past and present of Nahuatl, literary traditions, variants. Introduction to Nahuatl phonetics, grammar and lexicon. 9. Mayan languages. The past and present of the Mayan languages. An introduction to the phonetics, grammar and lexicon of Yucatan Maya. 10. Languages of the Andean language area. Introduction to Quechua phonetics, grammar and lexicon. 11. Tupian language family. Introduction to Guaraní phonetics, grammar and lexicon. 12. Indian languages in Chile. Introduction to the phonetics, grammar and lexicon of the Mapuche language.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to expand knowledge about the linguistic diversity of Latin America, the current linguistic situation and the position of Amerindian languages and the language policy in relation to them in Latin American countries, as well as the influence of Amerindian languages on the form of local variants of Spanish. The student will also get to know the basic phonetic, grammatical and lexical features of the most important Native American languages.
Students will acquire knowledge of the linguistic diversity of Latin America, of indigenous languages' influence on local variaties of Spanish, and of linguistic theory thanks to the introduction to typologically very different languages.
