Course content

The course is dedicated to the following topics: - The phenomenon of the so-called caudillos? Juan Manuel de Rosas' Argentina - Porfiriato and the Mexican Revolution. - Latin American populism? case of Juan Domingo Perón. - Cuban Socialism? Fidel Castro: his revolution and his regime. - Two Chilean experiments? Eduardo Frei and the Christian Democracy, Salvador Allende y socialism with a human face. - Military junta in the southern tip of the South American continent in the 70th and 80 years? case analysis of Argentine junta. - Major problems of 20th century in Latin America? industrialization crash, the problem of external debt, the transition from authoritarian governments to democracy, projects of regional and continental integration, trade in narcotics and narcomafia, rural exodus and the emergence of megalopolises. - Latin American culture in the 20th century? literature (G. Mistral, P. Neruda, J. L. Borges, O. Paz. G. García Márquez, Vargas Llosa etc.), painting (F. Kahlo, D. Rivera, J. C. Orozco, D. A. Siqueiros, Botero F.), cinema (Argentine, Mexican, Cuban, Colombian.

Learning outcomes
|
Description and analysis of the development of Latin American society from early 19th century to the present day. Besides the political, economic and social factors, there is an emphasis on culture and the arts.
- Detailed understanding of the political, social, economic and cultural development in Latin America since early 19th century to present day. - Obtaining basic historiographical, artistic and scientific terminology. - Development of professional argumentation.

It is recommended to pass the course Latin American history and culture 1.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Mark, Written exam
1. Regular attendance and active participation in lectures and seminars. 2. Preparation for each class, previous study of recommended texts and familiarization with selected artifacts, both necessary to understand interpretation. 3. The test examines orientation in political, social, economic and cultural contexts of the period.
