Course content
|
The course is dedicated to the following topics: - The first inhabitants of the American continent and their first culture (Olmec, Teotihuacan, Tiahuanaco, Chavin, Nazca, Moche). - A large pre-Columbian cultures (Mayans, Aztecs, Incas). - Meeting-conflict of Old and New World? Discovery and Conquest (destruction of pre-Columbian cultures, the emergence of Western civilization and its consequences). - Colonies? (a process called mestizaje, cultural syncretism, colonial architecture, art, and literature). - The fight for independence? (conflict between the Creoles and so called peninsulares, their political, economic, social and cultural consequences). - The birth of Latin American countries? (complex and complicated emergence of new political, economic, social and cultural structures, not less complex construction of new national identities of the emerging state units).

Learning outcomes
|
Description and analysis of the development of Latin American society from pre-Columbian times to the early 19th century and the disintegration of the Spanish colony into separate independent states. Besides the political, economic and social factors, there is an emphasis on culture and the arts.
- Detailed understanding of the political, social, economic and cultural development in Latin America since pre-Columbian times to the early 19th century. - Obtaining basic historiographical, artistic and scientific terminology. - Development of professional argumentation.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam, Seminar Work
1. Regular attendance and active participation in lectures and seminars. 2. Preparation for each class, previous study of recommended texts and familiarization with selected artifacts, both necessary to understand interpretation. 3. The test examines orientation in political, social, economic and cultural contexts of the period.
