Course content
Students enhance their knowledge of general linguistics in the below-mentioned fields. Emphasis is put on mutual relations, on the students' ability to apply general knowledge during the studies of a concrete language. - Language and its functions, functioning of the language as a system of signs (i.e. place of the linguistics within social sciences, relations of the linguistics with other disciplines). - Language levels and their functioning (distinctive and semantic units). Graphetic level of the language. - Linguistic sign, its principles and structure, its conception in various linguistic schools. Motivation and arbitrariness of the linguistic sign. - Semantics and semiotics. - Classification of languages. Comparative linguistics. - Evolution of the language and linguistic changes. Their causes and types. - Subsystems of the language. Vertical, horizontal and area subsystems. - Style and stylistics. - Interdisciplinary branches (psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, philosophy of language, mathematic linguistics, neurolinguistics etc.). Students' publication activity is welcome. Students should publish reports in specialised linguistic journals, reviews of books from the field of the general linguistics etc.

Learning outcomes

Oral exam

The student's active participation in the course and fulfilment of all the requirements set by the teacher during the course.
