Course content
The student will learn about the basic differences between European and Brazilian Portuguese and about the stages of evolution of Brazilian Portuguese influenced by historical context.The major topic will be the changes in the status of Brazilian Portuguese from dialect of European Portuguese via variant of European Portuguese to achieving the status of an independent linguistic norm. It will also deal with the fact of how sociopolitical context influences the use of Brazilian Portuguese as official/national language. Last but not least, the student will learn about variations of Brazilian Portuguese, about minority languages in Brazil and about language policy of the government in relationship to them.

Learning outcomes
The goal of this course is to make students aquainted with Brazilian Portuguese in its sociopolitical context. It describes the evolution of Brazilian Portuguese and of its 3 major norms. It also deals with the changeable approach to ethnic minorities and how it influences sociopolitical approach to minority languages in Brazil and hence whether it is possible to talk about Brazil as about plurilingual country.
The Student will get the knowledge of how difficult it is to define and create language norm and what factors interfere into this process.
Prerequisites
The course Dialectology of Portugal and Brazil is recommended.
