1. Linguistics and its discipline. 2. Language classification. Double articulation of human speech. 3. Origin of language and humans. Animal communication. Language of young children. 4. Spoken and written language. Territorial and social stratification of language. 5. A brief outline of linguistics. Comparative and historical grammar of the 19th century. 6. Structuralism in linguistics. The Geneva School. The Prague School. American descriptivism. 7. Generative and transformational grammar. 8. Introduction to border disciplines. Computational linguistics. 9. Psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics and sociolinguistics (major thesis). 10. Semantics, semiology, semiotics. Philosophy of language.

Learning outcomes
|
Basic terms and concepts of General Linguistics and particular fields o Linguistics (especially Phonetics, Morphology, Syntax, Lexicology and Semantics). Language and its functions, evolution of language, linguistic sign. Evolution of linguistic theories and principal tendencies in modern Linguistics.
Assumption of basic terms and concepts of General Linguistics, particular linguistic fields and theories.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Mark, Oral exam
Active participation in lectures and seminars, preparation for each classes. The test verifies the orientation in basic issues of general linguistics.
