Course content
On the basis of texts written in Portuguese, students get acquainted with the most important authors and works of the respective periods (informative and Jesuit literature of the 16th century, Baroque literature - Gregório de Matos, arcadism, the 1st half of the 19th century - Goncalves Dias, José de Alencar, realism - Machado de Assis, modernism - M. de Andrade, G. Ramos, G. Rosa, C. Lispector etc.). Students become familiar with main literary trends and movements, with an emphasis on the formation of the national literature. During the seminars, students work with selected texts of the most important authors.

Learning outcomes
The course, offering the survey of the history of Brazilian literature, deepens the analysis of the subject matter dealt with in the Introduction to Portuguese and Brazilian Literature.
Students acquire a complex representation of main trends in the evolution of the Brazilian literature since its beginnings in the 16th century up to present days. Students should become able to define main notions, basic notions for the given literary context and interconnect literary questions with culturally historical issues. Students should be able to classify the concrete authors within such context, characterise generally their works and analyse in detail the selected texts. Students learn to discuss the matter and independently approach the interpretation of texts.
