Course content
The Role of the Catholic Church. Economic Challenges. Organized Crime. Educational System. Political System.

Learning outcomes
The course will focus on selected authors and literary works from the last 30 years, on the social problems of contemporary Italy (especially related to the labor market, unemployment, generational changes, consumerism) and on the linguistic properties of selected texts, including translation possibilities. Program: Reading and analysis of examples from artistic prose (Antonio Moresco, Ermanno Cavazzoni, Gesualdo Bufalino, Claudio Magris, etc.). Reading and analysis of examples from prose depicting life in Italy (Giani Celati: Costumi degli italiani; Domenico Starnone, Fuori registro; Aldo Nove, Mi chiamo Roberta; Roberto Nesi, Storia della mia gente, etc.) Reading of Italian journalistic texts about contemporary Italy, discussion, comparison of the situation in Italy and the Czech Republic. In addition to sociological and literary analysis, we will also monitor the linguistic properties of the text, lexicon, and translation possibilities into Czech. Requirements: reading of assigned texts, active participation in discussions, paper, review of a selected novel, translation of a sample. The course is taught in Italian.
Deepening the competence to analyze a text. Gaining knowledge about contemporary Italian society.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Italian.
