Course content
The themes of the course will be concentrated in these groups: 1. The problem of the literary language. The genesis of Italian "volgare" and their relationships with medieval Romance languages. 2. The evolution of medieval love poetry since the Sicilian school to Petrarch's Fragments, a decisive text of this genre. Apart from Petrarch will be studied authors like Letnini, Guittone, Dante, Cavalcanti, Cino, Sennuccio. 3. Dante's Comedy as a language experiment, a work of a Weltanschauung and a crossroad of medieval literary genres. 4. The evolution of the tales since the 13-th century to Boccaccio's Decameron. The style and ideology of the Decameron. 5. Important examples of other genres: moral literature, satire, encyclopedias, cantari, memoirs. 6. The birth of humanism and the Latin work of Francesco Petrarch. The course is supported by the project CZ.1.07/2.3.00/20.0026 Centrum pro práci s renesančními texty.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to explain the main evolution lines in the Italian literature since the middle of the 13-th century to the end of the 14-th century. The teaching and the text reading is concentrated to the fathers of the Italian literature (Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio), but it tries to treat a wide review of genres and themes which are frequent in this period.
Comprehension of the specific features of the medieval literature, of its relationship to the society, ability to reach the medieval imagery through the literature, acquaitenance with important texts of poetry, fiction and philosophic literature.
