Course content
1. Napoleon a restoration (first half of the 19th century) 2. Uniting Italy 3. Building a unified state - from Risorgimento to the "Belle Époque" 4. Italianita´ 5. First world war 6. Fascist period 7. Second world war 8. The republic and fascist heritage 9. The 60s and the following terrorism of the 70s 10. Dissolution of the traditional political parties in the 90s 11. Issues in contemporary Italy

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with an overview of Italian history since pre-Roman times till today, call attention to key characteristics of Italian history, precedents of the Italian state (ancient Rome and European powers), to issues of Italian historiography, and to cultural development (painting, sculpture, architecture, music, drama).
The student will understand developmental tendencies of Italian history since pre-Roman times up until today, will be aware of key characteristics of Italian history, precedents for the Italian state (ancient Rome, European powers), issues in Italian historiography, will be capable of contrasting historical development with cultural development (painting, sculpture, architecture, music, drama).
