Course content
The course will cover the following topics: 1. French drama of the Romantic era. Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas Sr, Alfred de Vigny, Alfred de Musset. 2. Realistic and naturalistic drama. 3. Symbolism in drama: Maurice Maeterlinck. 4. Edmond Rostand and his Cyrano de Bergerac. 5. Dramatic production in the first half of the 20th century and the "classic" authors Claudel, Giraudoux, Anouilh. 6. Rolland's "theatre of the revolution" and its critical reception 7. Existencialism in French dramatic production, Sartre and Camus. 8. Theatre of the absurd, Artaud's "theatre of cruelty", "new" theatre

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the stages of development of the French 19th and 20th-century drama and to guide them to independent literary analysis of the fundamental texts.
better understanding of the development of the 19th and 20th century French drama in the social and cultural context perfection of the ability to work with literary terminology improvement of the ability to interpret a text as a structure of meaning, to apply different historical and current approaches of literary analysis on the particular texts development of the ability to lead a scholarly discussion

1. regular attendance and active participation in the seminars 2. preparation for each class, knowledge of the text to be analysed The exam will test the understanding of literary history of the given epoch and literary theory.
