Course content
1. How do languages evolve? The main principles of linguistic change (phonetics, analogy, substratum, etc.) 2. Indo-European. 3. The Italic languages (Latin and Osco-Umbrian). Archaic Latin. 4. Classical Latin. 5. Vulgar Latin. 6. Gallo-Romance. The Germanic invasions. 7. Old French. 8. The Vikings in Normandy and French in England. 9. The morphological system of Old French. 10. Lexic and syntax of Old French. 11. Text analysis.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on two basic areas of topics related to the development of the French language: (1) the external history of the French language (i.e. social, cultural, literary, political events that influenced the use and form of French in a given period); (2) the internal history of the French language (i.e. the development of the language's own system and its sound, lexical, and grammatical levels). These two areas of topics will be intertwined in the presentation.

The condition for completing the course is regular attendance, and preparation for classes. The exam tests knowledge of the material covered.
