Course content
The course covers the following topics: 1. Modern French, its codification. French Academy. 2. French Revolution, dialects and language centralisation. 3. Rise and fall of French as an international language. Anglicisation of French. 4. Francophony - geographical, institutional and cultura. Diversification of French in France and the French used in French-speaking countries. Its causes and forms. 5. Evolution of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammary from the middle French up to the contemporary French. 6. Evolution of French orthography.

Learning outcomes
The course covers two main topics concerning the evolution of the French language: (1) external history of the French language (i.e. social, cultural, literary, political events affecting the usage and the form of the French in the given period); (2) internal history of the French language (i.e. the evolution of the system of the language, its acoustic, lexical and grammatical levels). These two approaches will be combined in the course.
Understanding of the external and the internal history of the French language, in particular the phenomena permitting to understand some features of the contemporary language (exceptions, abnormalities, characteristic features of the French language as compared to other Romance languages).
Prerequisites
Latin 1 and Latin 2.
